Carlos/Chris' Masterclass | The Hobbyist | Week 5

Image
Tuesday 23rd of October  https://vimeo.com/296658626 This is what I produced from this Masterclass. I knew this class was to be similar to last weeks as it still involved taking recordings and using Premier Pro however, I found this week to be far more successful. I think it was more successful due to the fact I was more familiar of the software and had more control over my content. We were given the subject "The Hobbyist". We had to display a hobby that could be done or considered as a job. My first thought was criminology as I am very into missing person cases, murder cases and unsolved mysteries. However we had a limited time to gather materials to record some footage so I went with the next best thing; painting. I used a birds eye view set up and recorded myself using a DSLR painting a page with green paint. Yes, I know what you are thinking! Boring! However, the magic began when i started to edit. I used the paint as my green screen and collected video foo...

Tricia's Masterclass | Storytelling with Objects | Week 4

Image
Tuesday 16th of October  I was very unsure what to expect from this masterclass. We were given random objects, provided by Tricia. My item in particular was an old handbell. I partnered up with this project with my friend Daniel. He was given a metronome. So we had these two obscure objects but they were both connected with their sound. We did a brief research off their histories and could not find anything useful that would help our story line. Carlos and Tricia took us into the studio and gave us a really good introduction to the studio. I use to do a lot of work in the studio in the college and it was nice to revisit this era in the art world. So me and Daniel helped each other out and recorded footage of our items both separate and together. Once happy with our footage we made our way back to the media and photography room and worked on the computer using premier pro. Again Carlos gave us a demonstration on how to use this software. I was very appreciative of this...

Rick's Masterclass | Painting | Week 3

Image
Tuesday 9th of October  We didn't actively do anything in this masterclass with Rick. He mainly discussed what would happen if we decided to take this class on in the future. Painting has and always will be a part of my practise. No matter how far I stray I always am drawn back to it. I like it as I can be very expressionistic. A brush stroke to me can say a lot. It sets the mood and determines the atmosphere and I like the simplicity in the chaos that painting can hold .

Lacapo Seri

Image
Wednesday 24th October Iacopo Seri is an Italian artist who completed his MA in Visual Arts at the University of Architecture in Venice. His work revolves heavily around "living myths". He seeks to transform commonplace actions into vechiles for the unconvential understanding of the mystery of humanity. What can I say about this lecture? To start with, it was very… very weird. However, I do appreciate the communication skills Seri had with the audience. I didn’t hate the lecture, it was entertaining and I generally was interested in what he was trying to communicate. Although I do believe the sound making didn’t have to continue for the full hour and I would have liked if Lacopo Seri explained his work as well as the performance aspect of it. I want to know his why and what drives him and inspires him to do this kind of work. I was unable to stay for the question and answer session afterwards however I will discuss with some friends who have attended ...

Joseph Noonan- Ganley

Image
Wednesday 10th of October Joseph Noonan-Ganley is London based - originally from County Clare, Ireland. His practise focus' more on other people and is a lengthy process. He revolves his work around an artist, one that is dead and follows up on their life and reproduces work inspired on the information he has gathered in his discoveries. A notable piece of work by Ganley is "Femme Fabrications".     These were pieces of work produced when he followed up on the life of Joseph Cornell. Looking through every source available to him such as books and archives, he has made artworks based around the comments an author or another artist has made about Joseph Corenll. Specifically Joseph Noonan Ganley was interested in a problematic area of Corenlls life - his sexuality. Which also brought Fanny Sarito into the picture. Noonan Ganley had a problem with how women were represented so in his work he used flowers to figuratively represent them.   He created a show ...

Heath Bunting

Image
Wednesday Lecture Heath Bunting is a British contemporary artist based in Bristol. He is known as the founder of a sight irational.org and an early practitioner of Net.art. Buntings work to me personally sounds very complicated and I had a hard time understanding fully what he was doing or at least wanted to achieve. I do not excel in the technology department nor do I have the interest in anything high tech but Bunting based his work around creating open and democratic systems by modifying communications technologies and social systems. The dull delivery paired with the subject matter was not very appealing to me at all. This made me very self aware of my own practise and how I know as a member of the audience that format and structure is vital in exceeding in a good presentation of my work however when reading from a "script" or rather notes I don't believe the your passion in what you do as an artist shines through. Heath Bunting clicked on links and spoke a...

Working with Sound! | Masterclass | Week 2

Image
Tuesday 2nd of October So yesterday I had a Masterclass to do with sound. Honestly i was not fussed when I first heard that I had a class on this; mainly because I am not good with technology! However I kept a positive outlook and said I would give it my best shot!! So my tutor Peter Appleton was taking this class and he gave us our brief which mentioned metamorphosis. We signed out some sound recorders and were sent out to gather some organic primary sources. I was working with two people from my group Nicole and Daniel. Instead of running around gathering random stuff I suggested we could make a soundtrack revolving around a "horror" theme with strange and irritating sounds that make you feel uncomfortable and that we should ask if we could record some stuff from the workshop on the lower ground floor.  We got some amazing stuff down there like machines cutting into wood and plastic, rattling metal cages and hammering stuff here and there. (Not a good day to h...

Francis Bacon in Correlation with my Practise

Image
As of right now, there are many directions I could take my practise. Over the Summer holidays I focused on a few different concepts which I will develop in my own time. Now that I am back at Uni i want to go beyond just concepts. However, I have been struggling thinking of what I can do or rather what I want to do. In all art I create it is very clear my main objective has been to get reactions from the audiences and I love how I can manipulate emotions with a stroke of a paintbrush.   I want my work to mean something though. So for this part of my practise I am going to be a bit selfish; I want my work to mean something to me. For me I don't need an audiences approval, art is my thing, art is my expression. I no longer want to make art that pleases others, i want to create art that pleases me.  I have been doing some research trying to draw inspiration and I discovered an artist I have came across before but decided to look into him more in depth; Francis Bacon....
