Heath Bunting
Wednesday Lecture
Heath Bunting is a British
contemporary artist based in Bristol. He is known as the founder of a sight irational.org and an early practitioner of Net.art. Buntings work to me personally sounds very complicated and I had a hard time understanding fully what he was doing or at least wanted to achieve. I do not excel in the technology department nor do I have the interest in anything high tech but Bunting based his work around creating open and democratic systems by modifying communications technologies and social systems. The dull delivery paired with the subject matter was not very appealing to me at all. This made me very self aware of my own practise and how I know as a member of the audience that format and structure is vital in exceeding in a good presentation of my work however when reading from a "script" or rather notes I don't believe the your passion in what you do as an artist shines through. Heath Bunting clicked on links and spoke about his work like it had been the 100th time and he was fed up. I do not want this to happen with my practise. You practise, motivation and inspiration change from day to day, so why should you talk about your art as if you are back to square one?
The positive things I have taken away from this lecture however were his sheer motivation to keep going on with his practise even though there was a lot on his plate and a lot of people on his back that did not agree with his work. Determination is something that us vital for all artists to have. They need to be committed to their practise and determined to move forward and keep creating no matter what the circumstances may be.
After the lecture I attended the Q+A afterwards and I was so much more impressed and interested in what Heath Bunting had to say. It felt much more natural, enthusiastic and convincing. I really believe that is important to note. Once the environment around changed, the way he spoke about his work changed too. It made it clear how surroundings, environments and different levels of intimacy affect the outcome of how we act, present ourselves and talk. I believe if Heath Bunting took his passion from the Q+A session and injected it into his presentations when talking about his work more people would be interested and take on board what he presenting. Nothing stuck with me from this lecture but that personality change where he went from being essentially boring to passionate always reminds me of importance of presentation and perception. When giving these talks these artists aren't just selling their work to an audience they have to sell themselves.
