Working with Sound! | Masterclass | Week 2
Tuesday 2nd of October
So yesterday I had a Masterclass to do with sound. Honestly i was not fussed when I first heard that I had a class on this; mainly because I am not good with technology! However I kept a positive outlook and said I would give it my best shot!! So my tutor Peter Appleton was taking this class and he gave us our brief which mentioned metamorphosis.
We signed out some sound recorders and were sent out to gather some organic primary sources. I was working with two people from my group Nicole and Daniel. Instead of running around gathering random stuff I suggested we could make a soundtrack revolving around a "horror" theme with strange and irritating sounds that make you feel uncomfortable and that we should ask if we could record some stuff from the workshop on the lower ground floor.
We got some amazing stuff down there like machines cutting into wood and plastic, rattling metal cages and hammering stuff here and there. (Not a good day to have a head ache but I fought through!) When we were finished we downloaded our sounds onto the computer. Using Audacity and freesound.org we made a soundtrack. It turned out to be very industrial and could paint an image in your head what was happening while listening to our final product. We were very proud of what we produced and I was taken back with everything I had just learned in that short lesson and I surprisingly really enjoyed it! Peter did a great job showing us how to use the recording devices and software. I definitely can picture myself creating some pieces in the future.
I really enjoyed how the sound track could paint such a strong image with out there being any visual aids and I believe I could use that to my advantage especially if I am going to continue down the road of displaying emotions in my practise!
