Wednesday Lecture | Jasmir Creed | 6th of February
Jasmir Creed
Jasmir Creed is an artist most recently based in Liverpool, Manchester being her hometown. Studying Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art in London. She is very much attracted to and inspired by transient places. From what I gathered about Creed she admires the short amount of time a person is in such a place but really how much that area is apart of their lives. As for instance, standing waiting for a train in a station. A pretty mundane act, repeated undoubtedly by millions. So what does this person really take in? What do they notice? Has it just became a blur a meaningless act of routine and form?
There is a strong sense disorientation in her work through the use of perception and depiction, sometimes leaving you feel alienated in this big world that surrounds us. Concrete buildings, tall skylines, roads that stretch for miles and pavements that are forever winding and bending.
Jasmir Creed herself claims that she is interested in the psycho-geography and that her work reflects how geographical location can affect emotions and even behaviours.
While I do find Creeds reasoning for her works of art interesting , it is the art itself and how it has been produced caught my attention. There are strong contrasts of light and dark, geometric and organic through the use of exaggerated forms. I believe it is the use of her talent and skill is what heighten the effects of her work.
I was particularly impressed by the use of montage with in her work. She doesn't just use the digital process of the camera but rather takes it upon herself to create these hand made prints. It creates a surreal and rather unusual feel in what would be in an otherwise normal situation.
I used to love creating mixed media pieces and haven't dived much into doing mixed media since at University and Jasmir Creed has definitely inspired me to get creating again introducing some of the methods I use to love doing but haven't got the chance to do again. Even simple techniques like pulled paper, using different backgrounds and medias to add depth and more context to a piece. I have enjoyed focusing on my painting and I believe it is time to step it up a notch. I will certainly be creating more pieces that involve my own raw imagery and experience and perhaps trying out similar techniques that Creed has shown me in this lecture.
