I Like, Remodel (The Walker Gallery Exhibition)

I've had the amazing opportunity of creating and displaying a piece of art work in The Walker Art Gallery. This was also an assignment given to us to complete. Through out the duration of this assignment I was engaging in meetings with staff of John Moore's but also staff that worked at the Walker Art Gallery.
Charlotte Keenan one of the curators at The Walker Art Gallery gave us a tour of the artwork and suggestions where our possible future pieces of work could be displayed. During the guided tour I took into consideration pieces of work that could possibly inspire my own practise and/or process.
We were brought through many rooms but what stood out to me the most was room 11.
Room 11 was the "British Art 1880-1950" room. This room appealed to me for many reasons, i love the bright atmosphere, the clean refreshing white wall and of course the variety in art works they had in there.
There was one painting in particular that inspired me greatly, that was the painting "Nightfall, Luxor" by Sir David Young Cameron. For me it was a painting ahead of its time, it featured beautiful vibrant blues and greens that made the rest of the silhouetted painting really contrast and pop. This definitely inspired my practise, i knew i wanted to do a very bright, bold and contrasting piece after this visit and discovery at the Walker Art Gallery.

I also wanted to put emphasis on the elements they were trying to bring into their gallery. In the Walker they were trying to fetch more interactive, textured pieces to add to you experience. (As seen below) Again this definitely encouraged me to do a mixed media piece.

As seen in my previous post of the work i displayed in the cross critque, my practise quick changed when i discovered the movement Abstract Expressionism and after my visit at the Walker Gallery. This pieces were a build up to what I was about to create.

For me personally, I couldn't plan a piece like this. I worked with the colours and the paint itself (again taught from artists like Jackson Pollock) rather than what images were acctually being perceived on the canvas. This worked perfectly for me however as it was best for my process this time to have a piece displayed that was open to interpretation.

From the Cross Year Critique and other reactions I received, people interpreted my work to have aquatic elements or else elements of nature in them so i used this information to inspire my piece for the Walker Art Gallery.

In a final meeting with Charlotte before the show it was discussed sizing of my piece as i did want it to be a fair size, but again i had to take in consideration the nature of my environment. We agreed on a measurement that was quite suitable.

On the day of installation a problem a rose, in the space where I wanted to display my work there was a heater and it was a disturbance to the art work and threw it off looks wise. After discussing with Charlotte, it was compromised that it would move further up form under my work but still had to be plugged in at the wall near my piece.

I believe the day of exhibiting was rather successful and i was proud of the work i did install!
