Francis Disley
October 4th 2017
Frances Disley is a Liverpool based artist. One of her most recent projects was "Abacus" Bluecoat, Liverpool, (2017). Francis attended John Moores on the 4th of October to present to us her work and the thoughts behind it. What I gathered from her lecture was that she exposes the reality, the chaotic mess with in a creators brain, showing the battling and wrestling of fixating on a final decision. To me her work embraces the frustration of not being able to focus on one thing. She depicts the trouble of being an artist and the silly romantic notion of playing with materials to create her own inspiration. Being inspired to me personally I feel is something you have to do on your own, certainly you can be helped but what inspires you and what you want to create can only be decided by you.
Ironically, even sitting in the fourth or fifth row of the Lecture Hall it was clear to me and I am sure to many others she was strong, in the sense that she could isolate herself from her work and emerse herself into a world of serenity. This was proven through a brief breathing exercise.
Disley was fascinated how theres a parallel of an artist in a studio and a person in a yoga class. Yoga seemed to be a hobby of hers and she quite briefly mentioned how she enjoys it and how it has been plucked from a different culture.
Disley was interested in tingling senses. She did this through a visual feast for the eyes, aromatic accents, unusual sounds and textures, all with in her work. In a lot of her work it shows this fetish she has with comfort, represented through the grey tracksuits.
Having herself with in her own works of art pleasantly forces her to become part of their narratives. Personally I thought that Disleys work does show a great stride of confidence in which she haves in herself and what she produces. To me I seen an artist with an amazing relationship with herself and her work.
